Common Garburator Problems We Fix in Vancouver

Most garburator problems are more fixable than people assume, and a lot cheaper than ripping the unit out and starting over. Our technicians carry the parts that fail most on every van. Splash baffles, mounting flanges, dishwasher inlet seals, hex wrenches, replacement reset assemblies, full motor builds for the common InSinkErator, Moen, and Waste King units.

We do garburator repair in Vancouver across home and commercial appliance repair Vancouver work. Restaurants and cafes get prioritised because a backed-up commercial sink shuts down a whole prep line in minutes. Here are the six garburator faults we get called about most.

Flipped the switch and got nothing? Or a faint clicking sound? A jammed unit is the most common call we get. Usually a piece of bone, a fruit pit, a stray spoon, or a build-up of fibrous food has wedged the impellers and stalled the motor. Garburator repair in Vancouver for jams is something we sort fast. There’s a hex wrench socket on the bottom of most InSinkErator units, and a small red reset button on the underside, but if those don’t free it up, don’t keep flipping the switch. Every second the motor fights a stuck flywheel, the windings get hotter. Call us. We carry the right tools and we know what gets stuck where.

Hum but no grinding? That means the motor is running but the impellers aren’t moving. Stuck flywheel, almost always. Garburator repair in Vancouver for humming units is usually a quick fix once we get the impellers free, but if you let it hum for too long the motor windings burn out, and at that point you’re not repairing anything, you’re replacing the unit. So if it’s humming, switch it off at the wall right now and call us today. We’ll have the impellers spinning again before lunch.

Water pooling in the cabinet under the sink? Garburator repair in Vancouver for leaks is one of our weekly callouts, and the leak comes from one of three places. The flange at the top where the unit meets the sink basin, the dishwasher inlet on the side, or the bottom housing itself. Each one is a different repair. Top flange leaks are usually plumber’s putty failure, which we re-seal. Side inlet leaks are typically the dishwasher hose clamp or the inlet gasket. Bottom housing cracks mean replacement, no way around that one. We’ll tell you straight which kind you have and what it costs to fix.

No hum, no click, nothing happening when you flip the switch? Before you do anything else, push the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If that doesn’t bring it back, check the breaker in your panel. If both are fine and it’s still dead, you’ve got either a failed wall switch, a wiring fault under the sink, or a burnt-out motor. Garburator repair in Vancouver for dead units is a quick diagnosis. Our technician will know within ten minutes whether you’re looking at a switch swap, a wiring repair, or a full unit replacement.

Sink filling with dirty water from the garburator side every time you run it? It’s usually one of two things. There’s a clog past the unit further down the drain line, or your dishwasher is pushing water back through the cross-drain because the garburator outlet is partially blocked. Garburator repair in Vancouver for slow drains and backups is something we sort the same day, with a proper inspection of the drain line below the unit and a clean-out of the outlet pipe.

Persistent smell coming from the garburator even after running it with citrus and cold water? Or a grinding noise that wasn’t there a month ago? Smell is usually trapped food in the splash baffle, the rubber piece at the top of the chamber, which gets chewed up over time and traps gunk in the folds. Grinding usually means the impellers are damaged or the bearings are wearing out. Garburator repair in Vancouver for smell and noise issues is straightforward. We replace the splash baffle if that’s the problem, or, if the bearings have gone, we’ll quote you a full replacement. We carry baffles for InSinkErator, Moen, and Waste King on every van.

Garburator Repair Across All of Vancouver

We cover all of Vancouver for garburator repair. Downtown, Yaletown, Coal Harbour, The West End, Kitsilano, West Point Grey, Shaughnessy, Fairview, South Granville, Mount Pleasant, East Vancouver, Commercial DriveGrandview-Woodland, Riley Park, Dunbar, Kerrisdale, Marpole, and Hastings-Sunrise.

A big chunk of our garburator repair work in Vancouver comes from the Downtown, Yaletown, and Coal Harbour condo towers, where InSinkErator Badger 1/3 HP units are the developer-fit standard. Tight under-sink cabinets in those buildings make for trickier service access, but we do this every day.

On the West Side, in Kitsilano, Point Grey, Shaughnessy, and Dunbar, we see more InSinkErator Evolution series units in family kitchens. Higher horsepower, quieter, better build quality, but they jam on the same things every other unit does. Avocado pits and chicken bones are the usual suspects.

In East Vancouver, Commercial Drive, Hastings-Sunrise, and the older homes around Riley Park and Mount Pleasant, we’re often working on units that are 15 or 20 years old. Sometimes a repair makes sense, sometimes the impellers and bearings are too far gone and replacement is the smarter call. We tell you which one it is.

One thing worth knowing. Some Vancouver strata buildings prohibit garburators entirely under their plumbing rules, so before you replace a dead unit, check your strata bylaws. If you’ve got one and it’s working, we’ll keep it running.

Garburator Brands We Repair in Vancouver

InSinkErator dominates the Vancouver garburator market by a wide margin. Most condo developers fit Badger 1/3 HP units as the basic option, while the higher-end Evolution Compact and Evolution Excel series show up in custom kitchens across Kitsilano, Point Grey, and Shaughnessy. We also work on Waste King, Moen, and the rebadged units sold under KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Kenmore, and GE. Most of those are made by InSinkErator anyway, just with a different sticker. Whatever’s under your sink, we carry parts for it.

I reached out to Barton on Monday after my Blomberg washing machine stopped mid-cycle — it would fill with water but the drum wouldn’t spin. With a baby at home and a load of clothes stuck inside, we were desperate for a quick fix.

Dan contacted me the same day, came by Tuesday for diagnostics, and returned Wednesday with a replacement motor. Two days from first contact to fully repaired — I honestly couldn’t ask for more.

Dan was professional, efficient, and clearly knew what he was doing. Highly recommend Barton if you need fast, reliable appliance repair.

Dryer not drying after moving into a new home, the previous owners didn’t clean the lint filter after every use and dirt got behind and into the components of the machine. Called Barton, the turnaround was quicker than expected. Service requested Monday and by Wednesday the same week, a Barton technician attended - disassembled the machine, cleaned the dirty components and re-assembled in less than 30 minutes. Affordable price, quality service! Highly recommended.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Bruce from Barton Appliance Repair since Dec 24 2024 until April 5 2025, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with his service! He repaired both my oven and refrigerator, and the entire experience was outstanding. Mr. Bruce was not only professional and knowledgeable but also incredibly efficient in diagnosing and fixing the issues. He took the time to explain what was wrong with both appliances and provided clear, honest advice. My oven and refrigerator are both working perfectly now, and I truly appreciate the high-quality work. I highly recommend Mr. Bruce and Barton Appliance Repair to anyone in need of appliance repairs – you won’t be disappointed!

Frequently Asked Questions About Garburator Repair in Vancouver

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? CALL US

How much does garburator repair cost in Vancouver?
Most garburator repairs in Vancouver run between $120 and $280 depending on what’s wrong. A simple jam clearance sits at the lower end. Splash baffle replacements and switch repairs are mid-range. A full unit replacement, if the motor or bearings have gone, runs $300 to $600 depending on the brand and horsepower. Garburators are one of the cheapest appliance repairs we do, much cheaper than fridges, dishwashers, or ovens. Our $100 diagnostic fee gets credited toward the repair if you go ahead, so you’re not paying twice.

Depends on the age and the fault. If it’s under 7 or 8 years old and the issue is a jam, a leak from the dishwasher inlet, a bad switch, or a worn splash baffle, repair makes sense. Cheap and quick.

But if the motor’s burnt out from running while jammed, or the bottom housing is cracked, or the unit is 15 plus years old and the bearings are gone, replacement is the better move. We’ll tell you honestly which way to go. We’d rather you know the truth than pay for a repair that won’t last six months.

Switch it off at the wall right now. Don’t keep flipping it. Every second the motor hums against a stuck flywheel, the windings get hotter, and that’s how you go from a $150 jam clearance to a $400 replacement.

Press the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If you have an InSinkErator, there’s a hex wrench socket on the underside. You can stick a 1/4 inch hex key in there and turn it back and forth a few times to free the impellers. If that doesn’t do it, leave it alone and call us. It’s almost always a foreign object: fork, bottle cap, fruit pit, and we have it sorted fast.

No. Never. Not even with the power off at the wall. Not even with the breaker tripped.

The impellers can spring loose suddenly when whatever was jamming them gives way, and they’ll take fingers with them. We see hand injuries from this every year and they’re horrific. Use the hex wrench socket on the bottom of the unit. Use a wooden spoon or a long pair of tongs to pull out anything visible from the top. Or call us. We have the right tools and we know the inside of these units.

Garburators handle soft, small, biodegradable food waste. Bits of vegetable, small pieces of cooked food, eggshells in moderation, that kind of thing.

What they don’t handle. Bones of any size, fruit pits and stones (avocado, peach, cherry, mango), coffee grounds (these clog the drain line below the unit), pasta and rice (they swell and block the drain), potato peels (turn into a starchy paste), banana peels, onion skins, celery, corn husks, anything fibrous or stringy. About 40 percent of the jam calls we get in Vancouver are coffee grounds and avocado pits. If you’re not sure, throw it in the bin.

Call before noon and we’re usually there the same afternoon. Afternoon calls get next-day in most cases. Most garburator repair jobs in Vancouver are done in under an hour. We carry parts for InSinkErator, Moen, and Waste King on every van, so most of the time we’re in, fixed, and out in one visit. Call us to check today’s availability.
